I went ahead and bought a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! instead of a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Filter that was in my car on the left, filter from O’Reilly on the right. Yeah, that one’s going back to the store. Also, I’m going to get out the Simple Green and clean up the engine bay when I have some time.

(I think the filter with that dangly gasket strap thing is for an N54 airbox, not an N55. Not sure why so many parts databases show so many N54 filters for my N55-equipped car.)

GET OUT THE HACKSAW AND MAKE IT FIT

Yeah, that would be like how parts databases have a lot of wrong listings for parts on a W124 4MATIC. even RockAuto.

If you change the model year to 2012 you get these results , which look like the one you have.

RockAuto also shows a bunch of N54 filters when I search by my car. They at least also include a couple N55 filters shaped like the one on the left in my picture.

Yeah I double checked RealOEM. BMW part number is 13717599285, also sold as Mahle LX1791. $19.99 shipped from RockAuto after 5% off coupon code.

Clearly the universe is mocking you for just getting a panel filter. Now you can make it right.

If you squint a bit, you can see the similarities.

Ah yes, those model year transistions where it lists multiple parts, because really, they both might fit... Not enjoyable

I think it’s cause some 2011s has the N54 and some has the N55, like my 2012 128i had an N52 even though later 2012s had the N51.

This is likely true. Also since the cheapest I can find a correct panel filter is $19.99 instead of the $13.99 for this incorrect one, the intake is now only 10x more expensive than the panel filter instead of 14.224x more expensive. Totally worth it now!

In college I had a 89 Celica GTS with the 3S-GE motor. When I first got it, I went to change the plugs and wires and other stuff. I had to go back to Napa (Only game in town) three times and bring in one of the old wires before they could give me what I needed. The issue was the three engines available that year were the 3S-Fe (base), 3S-GE (GTS), and 3S-GTE (turbo). As you can imagine, I got the other two before getting what I needed. The kicker is each one had very different wires. I would have thought the turbo and GTS ones would be cross compatible, but they were not. Very frustrating.
